To qualify as a young judge in India is a matter of prestige and great accomplishment. It requires a certain level of discipline and commitment to qualify as a judge in a country of a billion people and 2 million lawyers. All aspirants required to crack Judiciary exams For fresh graduates, there is judiciary exams conducted by the respective state public service commissions (like Delhi Judicial , UP Judiciary services, MP Judicial services etc.).The Indian judiciary Exams system is designed in a manner where there are several courts at different levels in every district of a given state with different mandates. There are also specialized courts for specific statutes or purposes. The highest court in a district is the district and sessions court. Each state conducts its own recruitment process of judges, through Judiciary Exams and interviews. There is a lot of similarity in how different states select their judges in Judicial Services, but there are many peculiar aspects. The common is proper interpretation of every provisions of Act is required to qualify judicial Services. It would also appear that the criteria to become a judge/civil judge is designed in such a way that local candidates will have some advantage. In reality though, candidates often appear in multiple state Judicial Services/ state wise judiciary Exams and even get selected in many different states. Level for Judiciary Exams/ Judicial Services:
The judicial examinations have two entry levels-
1. For fresh law graduates : An entrance exam conducted by public service commissions or the High Courts of the respective states. They put out advertisements and notices. Essentially comprises three cadres of judges: District Judges, Senior Civil Judges & Civil Judges (Junior Division). These judges have civil as well as criminal jurisdiction. The syllabus of these exam can be found on the website of commissions.
2. Higher judicial services or HJS : This avenue open for lawyers who have some experience under their belt. This experience is typically seven years of litigation practice.The syllabus for exams are typically the same. The added advantage for competing and passing by clearing the higher judiciary exams is that the candidate gets posted as an additional district judge way above the lower Judiciary officers. It also opens the door for promotion to the High Courts of respective states as High Court judge.
- Eligibility criteria for Judiciary Exams : A person who has completed his LL.B. or B.A.LL.B
- Minimum and maximum age limit for the entry-level Exam : It varies state to state however in general, the lower age limit is 21 yrs. and the upper age limit is 32 years.
